Windows 8.1 Support Has Ended

17 January, 2023

Companies, both large and small, are facing a common cybersecurity problem. Many of them have computers that are still running outdated operating systems. One possible explanation is that the staff may only use these devices infrequently. Alternatively, it could be due to the company's use of specialized software that is not compatible with newer operating system versions.

The problem with outdated operating systems is that they become vulnerable to cyberattacks. When Microsoft or another developer retires an OS, it means that it is no longer supported. This means no more feature updates or security patches to address newly discovered vulnerabilities.

Recently, Windows 8.1 lost all support. Microsoft released this operating system in 2013, and it was officially retired on January 10, 2023. Microsoft warned companies that continuing to use Windows 8.1 after this date may increase their exposure to security risks and impact their ability to meet compliance obligations.

Here is what you need to know about Windows 8.1 Support:

The OS will still technically work

Even though an operating system reaches its end of life, it doesn't suddenly stop working. Many companies continue to use outdated OS without realizing the security risks. Technically, the OS will work as it did before retirement, but it is much less safe due to the loss of support.

Your system will no longer receive security patches

Hackers constantly search for software and OS vulnerabilities to exploit. They look for loopholes and write code to exploit them, gaining unauthorized access to systems. Software developers typically discover these vulnerabilities when hackers start breaching systems. They then release updates to fix these vulnerabilities and protect users from hacker exploits.

However, when an operating system reaches its end of life, these fixes are no longer made. Developers focus on their newer products, leaving the vulnerability unresolved. This leaves devices vulnerable to hacks for extended periods of time.

61% of security vulnerabilities in corporate networks are over five years old.

Options for upgrading

If you have a computer still running Windows 8.1, you have two options for upgrading: Windows 10 or Windows 11. However, if your system is running such an old OS, there is a chance it may not meet the requirements for these newer versions. In that case, you may need to consider purchasing a new device.

Is upgrading from windows 8.1 free?

It's worth noting that Microsoft is not generously offering free upgrades from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 or 11. This is likely due to the big-tech attitude of prioritizing of profits over customer satisfaction. Despite this, it may be worth considering upgrading for the potential benefits of increased security and improved performance. Additionally, the upgrade allows access to modern features such as facial recognition, updated accessibility options, and productivity tools like snap layouts in Windows 11. Whether these features are worth the investment is up to individual users to decide.

Steve Ballmer, thought you wanted your computer to be more like a windows phone. He is an idiot, and quite possibly the worst tech CEO of all time. Windows 8 was his idea, 8.1 was his way of saying sorry.

What happens if you don't upgrade?

If you choose not to upgrade from Windows 8.1, you face security and compliance issues. Without security updates, your system remains vulnerable to breaches as any vulnerabilities go unpatched. A breach on one system can also spread to newer devices on the same network.

Additionally, not upgrading may cause compliance issues if you need to comply with data privacy regulations like HIPAA. Using a device with an outdated OS jeopardizes your ability to meet compliance requirements.
